Threats to the Environment of Bilsa
Ecuador is home to a wide range of biological diversity. In particular, in Bilsa itself, there is a large number of endemic species and there are many that are yet to be discovered! Due to the large diversity in this area, conservation is an important aspect to the Bilsa Biological Reserve. Two main forests that Bilsa protects are the coastal pre-montane wet forest, of which only 1% is left, and the tropical moist forest, of which only 2-3% of the original forest is left.
Logging and uncontrolled fragmentations pose a huge threat to animal diversity, particularly for reptiles and amphibians. These animals are known for being sensitive to environmental changes, and the loss of habitat due to deforestation can drastically disturb and affect the reptile and amphibian communities that dwell in these locations. The unsustainable development and the lack of higher ranges of conservation plans bring no help to these species!
Overall, the threats to Bilsa, Ecuador are the rural-urban influence, agriculture, logging, fragmentation, oil extractions, the shortage of volunteers/funding, and the lack of a larger variety of developed conservations plans to implement at these locations.
