Within its borders, Ecuador is home to a wide range of habitats. From the coast to the Andes to the Amazon, there are a number of different types of land cover and vegetation. Bilsa, Ecuador is located in the northwestern region of Ecuador, and is home to one of the last sections of tropical rainforest on the Ecuadorian coast. More specifically, Bilsa is home to coastal premontane wet forest.

The Tumbes - Chocó - Magdalena biodiversity hotspot is the third most important biodiversity hotspot in the world. It ranges along the Pacific Coast, from southern Panama to Peru and includes the Galápagos Islands. The Ecuadorian portion of the hotspot includes Bilsa, which is known specifically for its high rates of endemism.
